In response to the tragic incident in Kalyani Nagar, Pune authorities have escalated their efforts to bolster road safety, resulting in the closure of numerous pubs and a surge in applications for drinking licenses. This intensified focus on public safety has led to the temporary shutdown of five pubs, with two of them closed due to encroachment issues, highlighting the authorities' unwavering commitment to ensuring order and security in the community.
Simultaneously, there has been a notable uptick in applications for drinking licenses, signaling a shift in the local drinking culture as residents become more attuned to legal requirements. Meanwhile, stepped-up police patrols targeting traffic violations have resulted in twenty-three apprehensions over the past 24 hours, encompassing instances of speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol.
Furthermore, on May 25, 2024, between the hours of 00:00 and 03:00 am, the Pune Police, under the guidance of Amitesh Kumar, Police Commissioner of Pune City, and Pravin Pawar, Assistant Police Commissioner of Pune City, orchestrated blockades at 32 locations within the Pune Police Commissionerate. During this operation, a thorough inspection of 1409 vehicles was conducted, leading to action being taken against 117 drivers found to be operating their vehicles while under the influence of alcohol. Noteworthy concentrations of these operations were observed in the Yerawada and Sahakarnagar police station limits, with fines amounting to Rs 2,84,500 imposed, in addition to 262 other actions related to drunk driving.
As the city grapples with the aftermath of the Kalyani Nagar tragedy, there is a renewed emphasis on collective action to ensure road safety for all residents.
